British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
