Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
