A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
