During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his term.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
