Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge specific rulings from the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
